First of all, please let me start by apologizing to Uniwigs for taking so long to post my review. You were so generous to pick me to receive a topper to try and I should have made more of an effort to get this posted in the time frame you requested. For that I am very very sorry. Thank you so much for this opportunity, I will do everything I can to let everyone know that you are an awesome company to work with! I belong to a hair loss group and would like to start posting reviews of wigs and toppers for newbies like me (I'm not a big video person so will have to find another avenue for that I guess, pictures and words are best for me right now).
Now for the Emily.... to start when I found this contest the only helper hair I had ever purchased were those little synthetic scrunchies that you can use to beef up your ponytail or create a bit of an updo. Well, except that one time about 20 years ago when I attempted to try a topper that was affixed to my head (you can read about that travesty in my introduction post here: https://hairlossdiscuss.com/threads/enough-is-finally-enough.58/ ). The thought of being able to try a topper now that I was ready to explore this world again was beyond my wildest dreams. I really thought it was just a chance to try it out and then send it back, I had no idea it was being GIVEN to me! What a bonus!
So the topper arrived and I was so excited! When I first posted for the contest, I had not yet been able to bring myself to purchase anything. Suddenly, prior to the contest ending, I found myself in a frenzy to purchase different things so that by the time the Emily topper arrived I had already purchased a number of fails. My first purchase was actually a wig from Uniwigs called Night Elf. It didn't look anything at all like any of the pictures, and it is still sitting in the box waiting for me to figure out what to do with it. I think it is meant to be a cosplay wig, something I wasn't aware existed before I started this journey, I don't think it is really meant for someone like me (46 years old, not into crazy hair at all). Oh well. Strike one. Then I purchased a synthetic topper by Belle Tress. It was beautiful and I loved it. But it was HD fiber (heat defiant) and apparently those are extremely difficult to care for, and after about 4 wears it started to feel really funny, and didn't look good anymore. I tried following instructions I found in various places to bring it back to life, but no luck. UGH- strike 2. I won't go through all my successes and failures up to this point, but there have been many of the latter and a few of the former (I have been a busy shopper). I will say, though, that all my purchases have been synthetic, and the Emily is my only human hair topper so far. I can't believe the difference in the hair quality! I mean, I have some really nice synthetic wigs now (I have yet to buy another topper after my first fail, more on why in a minute), but the Emily is in another league! Honestly... I can't believe how nice it is. Let me tell you, I would have been concerned given the low price point of this piece when you compare how expensive other human hair pices can be, but I want to say to anyone who feels that way- DO NOT let it worry you. This piece is quality! Now, to be fair, I have not worn it at all and have not styled it, which I will explain below, but I have tried it on multiple times and it feels amazing. The cap construction and mono top are really beautiful, and the clips are super secure. For the right person, this is going to be an amazing piece!
Why do I say "for the right person"? Well, for starters, since I had not yet purchased anything prior to entering this contest I really had no idea what I should have been looking for, and missed the mark in two areas. First, I didn't really know anything about color except for the scrunchies I referenced earlier which I usually buy in a 2, 4, or 6 depending on my hair color at the time. When I won I was asked if the medium brown would work for me, or if the soft black would be better. In retrospect, I should have asked more about the hair color because I went with the medium brown, and it is nothing at all like my biohair color. Now that I know more, this surprises me because I have purchased many synthetics since then in a color 4, but this one is a very dynamic coppery brown, not a chocolate brown like I am used to. Ok, that's fine. I figured I could just get my hair colored and then it would work fine. So I tried it on (after running my hands through it many times just reveling in the silky softness of the hair) which is when I learned lesson #2. The amount of hair loss I have really needs an advanced hair loss size cap. The Emily's cap is a 5x6, and it simply is not big enough for me. Not only does it not really cover the loss I have in the back, but I am so thin and sparse on the top that the clips do not clip securely and they actually hurt because I have so little hair and have to pull it so tight. I have tried adjusting it over and over, but I just cannot get it to sit right. It just short of perches on the top of my head, and over emphasizes the thinness of my hair underneath. I am so sad. I wish so much that this would have worked for me! Honestly- it is so beautiful! It has made me want to find a different one from Uniwigs that will work for me and so I have started to consider if the Melanie would be better for me. That has an 8.5x9 cap so it is definitely bigger, and maybe the Dark Coffee Brown they have available would be a better color match. One thing I know for sure, if the quality of a piece I purchase is anything like this one, I will be one happy girl. I do plan to purchase one in the future from Uniwigs once I get through Christmas spending (4 kids you know).
So- to sum up.... the Emily is a beautiful little piece! If you have beginning to moderate stages of thinning on the very top of your head only and really just want to hide it and add some volume, this piece will be PERFECT for you! Do not be afraid of the low price compared to other human hair pieces, this is the REAL DEAL! I wish I would have known about this about 5 years ago when I think I could have gotten away with this as my hair loss was not nearly so pronounced back then. If that is you now, don't wait! You don't have to suffer with thinning hair! A piece like this will truly change how you feel about your hair loss situation!
Attached are some pictures of the hair and the cap. I did try to take some pictures of it on me, but I make it look terrible so I don't think they are a great selling point and left them out. I did add a picture showing my hair loss so you can see what I mean by being advanced stage.
